Avlaki Beach Corfu
Description
Avlaki beach has taken its name from the Greek word avlaki which means furrow. This is because in the past there was a forrow letting the water flow from the sea to a small lake behind the beach making a nature lagoon.
Nowadays the forrow disappeared but the small lake is still there being part of Erimitis nature reserve.
Avlaki is located in a lovely area between Agios Stefanos to the south and the larger livelier resort of Kassiopi to the north, and is one of the lesser known resorts of Corfu, remaining quiet today but slowly gaining popularity. Avlaki is a long-time favourite with friendly locals for its impressive beach, clear water and peaceful atmosphere. Avlaki beach offers a quiet resort with a long scenic bay, good beach, safe swimming and clean water. Avlaki beach is easily accessible and popular with families and has been awarded Blue Flag recognition. Olive grove covered hills, cypresses and oaks add colour to the beautiful setting of Avlaki beach.
Avlaki remains a small, quiet and tasteful resort with just a few tavernas and a smattering of villas. Sailing is one of the most popular water sports in Avlaki beach, thanks to the cooling breezes that often arrive in the afternoon, though the privileged setting of Avlaki always provides sufficient shelter for relaxed swimming, windsurfing or dinghy sailing. This little Avlaki beach remains something of a secret. The kind of place that attracts locals for a quiet weekend visit. But if things get too tranquil you have much noisier Kassiopi.
